Franz Kafka's strange universe is explored in ARCANO in all its dark imagery, leading the spectator into the recesses of the human mind, where the kafkian beasts and shadows lurk. It is a fragmented show that through the actor, the space, the puppet and the word tries to find a balance between reality and hallucination, between the organic and the machine, between metaphysics and the need to make some sense of it all.
"The animal wrests the whip from its master and whips itself in order to become master, not knowing that this is only a fantasy produced by a new knot in the master's whiplash."
Franz Kafka
Teatro de Marionetas do Porto was created in September 1988, the same date in which the company was present at the official selection of the Festival Mondial des Théâtres de Marionnettes, in Charleville-Mézières. The company displays a non-conventional approach to puppetry. The quest is to always find new ways to create puppets, and new ways to set the rules for this form of theatre, regarding interpretation and the links to other art forms such as dance, visual arts, music and image.
